Having learned of a job offer “for white women only” at Saint-Eustache hospital, the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la youth reminded that discrimination and racist practices are prohibited in job postings and that they cannot exclude people on the basis of the 14 grounds listed in the Charter of human rights and freedoms, including color and sex.
“The Commission considers such a job offer unacceptable and illegal and calls for the responsibility of the CISSS des Laurentides, especially since it is a public body subject to the Act respecting access to equality in employment in public bodies. We will contact this CISSS to remind them of their legal obligations and ask them how they intend to remedy the situation. This job offer is shocking considering the large number of racialized people, especially women from these groups, who work in the health field and who have supported a health network severely affected by this last year of the pandemic, ” said Myrlande Pierre, Vice-President of the Commission responsible for the Charter mandate.
The Commission recalls that the Charter applies to all employers in Quebec, including employment agencies. The organization invites anyone who has been prevented from applying for this job to contact them to lodge a complaint.
The Commission has developed many tools for employers as part of its Recruit Without Discrimination campaign in order to inform them about practices free from discrimination
The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse ensures the respect and promotion of the principles set out in the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. It also ensures the protection of the interests of the child, as well as the respect and promotion of the rights recognized by the Youth Protection Act. It also oversees the application of the Act respecting equal access to employment in public bodies.
