The Essence of Work!
A Skills Sharing Career Forum for Anglophone Youth at the Laurentian Regional High School, Lachute

The Laurentian Youth Network (LYN) will host skill sharing workshops at the Laurentian Regional High School in Lachute which will coincide with Youth Employment Services (YES) Montreal’s video conference, Working in the 21st Century, a conference which will address employment trends relating to youth throughout Quebec.

In partnership with the Community Learning Centers, YES Montreal will host a live video conference which will link the different regions of Quebec through interactive discussions on topics addressing jobs in the public sector and job trends in the different regions.

Coordinated by LYN, the skills sharing component of the day’s event will offer a different perspective on the idea of “work” by providing participants with interactive opportunities to learn skills and the value of “skills sharing” in regard to stimulating youth engagement, empowerment and community participation. Some of the skill shares workshops offered will include, Vegetarian Cooking, Water Colors, Public Relations Writing, Public Speaking, Eco Jewellery and Woodworking. A number of youth-oriented organizations will also be on hand with display booths. A free lunch will be offered to participants and an invited panel of speakers will hold a discussion addressing various issues covered during the day, including “the essence of work”.
LYN was an off-shoot of Taking Our Place, a project aimed at strengthening the participation levels, sense of identity, and feelings of belonging of English-speaking youth (16 – 29) in the Laurentian region, and was carried out between November 2007 and March 2008 by the 4 Korners Family Resource Center and funded by Canadian Heritage.
4 Korners Family Resource Center was founded in response to a need expressed by the English speaking community of the Laurentian region who want improved access to health and social services in the English language.

Free transportation from the Lake of Two Mountains High School to the Laurentian Regional High School starting at 7:00 am will be offered.
