On Sunday March 1, Rosemère's Charbonneau Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland for people of all ages to enjoy. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the public is invited to the 2009 Winter Carnival where attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and outdoor activities and take in the day's many scheduled events.
The annual tradition returned last year following a hiatus and promises to be bigger and better than ever before. "It's a tradition that is very much appreciated by the population and we hope it will continue to live on for the next 50 years," said Rosemère Mayor Hélène Daneault at the official announcement February 16.
Program of activities
Some of the activities the public can expect include kick-sledding, sleigh rides, snow golf, snow soccer and dog sled races. There will also be inflatable structures and climbing walls, rescue demonstrations by the firefighters of the Rosemère-Lorraine Fire Safety Department, and an ice skating rink. There will be entertainment for the whole family and all activities are free.
For the first time this year, the Carnival will feature a giant slide made of ice along the edge of the Milles-Îles River. The decision to create a giant slide the public can enjoy all winter-long was decided last year. Parking will be available at the Arena and Alpha School and there will be a free shuttle bus between the school and Charbonneau Park. "We want people to get outdoors. Get some physical activity and fresh air and enjoy it with the whole family," said Daneault.
Fun for all ages
A wide variety of food and beverage stands will be set up for the day's events. Hot dogs will be sold by local scouts and Club Option Jeunesse will be selling hot chocolate. There will also be organic maple products, traditionally-made sausages, sandwiches, sweets, and other biological products being sold by L'Autre Marché.
About 1500 to 2000 people are expected to attend this year's Carnival. The choice to schedule it on Sunday, March 1 was in an effort to encourage more people from both Rosemère and surrounding cities to come out and enjoy the day's events. "We chose that day so people in other towns can also come celebrate with us. They will be able to witness our town's beauty and energy," explained Daneault.
