Two Mountains mayoralty hopeful Robert Landry has completed his team of candidates who are running for town council, with the addition of two more women to the slate. Nathalie Chayer, who is currently sitting on council representing the de la Gare district, is the sole council member to throw her support behind Landry, who is  challenging incumbent mayor Marc Lauzon. And Christelle Bourlard, a Quebec employment ministry agent, who according to her party has a background in political science and communications, is running in the district of du Lac.

Clashed with mayor
Chayer, 39, is a dental hygienist. She’s lived in Two Mountains for the past decade. An expert scuba diver and skiier, she believes the town’s recreational services program is in need of an update. She also thinks the Oka Road commercial district could be renewed with businesses that provide entertainment. Towards the end of Chayer’s current term on council, she clashed openly with the mayor over his lack of support for some of her council projects. During this time, she was also absent from council meetings on a number of occasions. Chayer told journalists she plans to manage her time more efficiently if elected.

Women’s issues
She says she hopes through her example to encourage other women to become involved in municipal politics. Bourlard, 40, has lived in Two Mountains for the past 35 years. She has a black belt in karate and has been a volunteer for the Société régionale d’histoire de Deux-Montagnes. She says she feels a strong attachment to Two Mountains and hopes that her two children, aged 4 and 8, also feel that way so that they start their own families here one day. She insists, however, that this will only be possible if Two Mountains’s finances are properly managed.

Pleased with candidates
“I am very happy to have Nathalie Chayer with us,” Landry told local journalists last week. “She knows very well what’s happening inside city hall. She has not been able to produce as much as she wished. But today joining our team she will be able to bring up her great ideas and help move this city positively. For Christelle Bourlard I’m also very happy to have her with us. She’s a woman with a lot of human resources. She has many degrees in politics.”

A balanced team
Landry has carefully rounded out his team with a third woman, France Roy who is running the district of Grand-Moulin. He has also made efforts to achieve a balance of anglophone and francophone candidates. The three other candidates, all male, are Guillaume Bouvrette, running in du Coteau, James McAllister, who is running in du Golf and Michael Parr, who is running in Olympia.
