On Sunday April 26, Rosemère will be hosting the Thérèse-de-Blainville/Lower-Laurentians Multiple sclerosis (MS) Walk for the public to participate in and help raise money for research. This year's motto is "Make you step the one that ends MS," and the provincial goal is to raise $1,390,000.
2009 marks the 15th anniversary of the annual event. Honorary co-chairs, Rosemère Mayor Hélène Daneault and Boisbriand Mayor Sylvie St-Jean, were present at the press conference March 18 to launch this year's event. "We are delighted to be hosting this year. It's not a lot for those in good health to walk. And at the same time, you can take in our beautiful city," said Daneault.
Importance cause
MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Canada has the fifth highest rate of MS in the world and affects three times as many women as men. Thérèse-de-Blainville police officer, Julie Boulet, has had MS for six years and is a spokesperson for this year's event. "It's a good opportunity to get in shape and get together with the people you love in order to raise funds that will make it possible to advance research and finally find a miracle cure," said said.
The walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. April 26 at Hubert Maisonneuve High School located at 364 Academie Street. Last-minute registration will be possible as of 8:30 a.m. The walk is 5 km and 10 km and is wheelchair accessible. As of 12 p.m. there will be entertainment and a light lunch at the finish line. "This is an importance cause that touches everyone. If you can't join us, please give generously to the MS Society of Canada. Your donations make all the difference in the important battle we're fighting," said St-Jean.
To sign up
To register, visit www.mswalks.ca and fill out a registration form. The deadline for registration is April 17. After the deadline, registration will take place on-site on the morning of the event. The next step is to find sponsors. All participants must collect pledges or make donations for MS. It's a good idea to set a goal for yourself and help boost the Quebec average of $212 per walker.
Forming a team is also a good way to increase excitement and the amount of donations. More than 63% of MS walkers are members of a team. A TeamMS must have a team captain and at least three other members under the same team name. Prizes will also be awarded to the top fund raiser, fund raising team and recruitment team as well as prizes awarded by the amount of money raised. "We hope to see you all there," said Daneault.
