The Town of Rosemere held its annual In Bloom contest ceremony on the evening of September 11 at City Hall. Over thirty finalists in eight different categories were chosen to compete for the competition. Twenty-three judges scoured the town searching for the best lawns, trees, flowers and overall beauty.
Mayor Helene Daneault was on hand to give out the awards and congratulate the winners personally. "Your efforts continue to improve the beauty of your environment and they are also an important source of inspiration for many of your neighbors. Rosemere is a city in harmony with nature that many communities secretly envy, "said Daneault.
Selection process
The town was divided into six residential sections and two commercial sections for the competition. The judges chose finalists in categories such as best flowers, attractive little corners, majestic trees and most environmentally-friendly. The mayor joked about how she glad she wasn't one of the judges. "I think it must have been very difficult to narrow it down," she told the crowd.
The grand winners included Nathalie Vanier and Marc Dubuc (364, rue Robert East) for best flower arrangement and Lucie Desjardins (305, rue Linden) for most attractive little corner. Suzanne Zartuhi-Arton's red maple tree (299 William Street) was recognized as the most majestic and Donald Long's Amur maple (234, rue Springhill) was deemed most unique. Johanne Fortin and John P. Vikers were awarded most-environmentally friendly for their efforts in protecting the environment by monitoring the marshes voluntarily.
Petits plaisirs
Businesses were also honoured for their efforts, as the category was divided into two sectors: Labelle boulevard and chemin de la Grand-Cote. Hotel Le Rivage on Labelle and Petit Cochon sante on Grand-Cote took the honours.
The evening also focused on the Petits Plaisirs organization. The Town of Rosemere presented a $4 720 check to the group which helps parents of handicapped children in the region by offering to care for them for a set time so parents can have an occasional break. The group works in collaboration with the CLSC, Le Flore and Maison Parenfant. "You provide a great service to our community and we are pleased to contribute to the smooth running of your organization," said Daneault.
The money was raised at the 9th annual Secret Garden's event which took place July 6. Fifteen Rosemere homeowners opened their properties to the public to showcase local art and help raise money for charity. "All this adds to the character of the city and I am very proud," said Daneault to the crowd.
