Project PRIISME a Success for CSSS Lac-des-Deux Montagnes
> (NSN)

The Centre de Sante and Services Sociaux (CSSS) Lac-des-Deux Montagnes PRIISME Respiratory Health program helps maximize services to patients referred by particpating institutions, particularly outpatient services. Project PRIISME was designed and developped for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
COPD is a major cause of hospitalization and mortality in Quebec. The PRIISME program is a model for public-private partnerships promoting concerted action to provide better services for people with chronic diseases, including COPD. "The project PRIISME Respiratory Health is a concrete example of continuity of services in the development of our local network services," said the head of the health physics CSSS du Lac des Deux-Montagnes, Andrée Lalonde.
Partners in the project include: Centre medical 25, Clinique medicale Deux-Montagnes, Clinique Montee de la Baie et Polyclinique de Saint-Eustache and the pharmaceutical society GlaxoSmithKline. The implementation of the program PRIISME offers several advantages such as greater decentralization of services to people suffering from COPD, support for general practitioners and other health professionals by further training on COPD and  higher performance services.
Project PRIISME has helped to reduce up to 50% of emergency room visits and up to 40% hospitalization in patients with asthma who attended an educational center, while decreasing returns to the emergency room. There was also a reduction in absenteeism from school and work, and better use of medicines and professional resources. Overall, Project PRIISME has had a positive impact on the quality of life of people with chronic respiratory disease.
GlaxoSmithKline will invest a total of $ 50 000 over the next two years to help the CSSS Lac des Deux-Montagnes with the project. The money will go towards providing  information and education to people affected by COPD and training professionals (doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and pharmacists) working both in both the private sector and schools. "PRIISME is a patient-centered program which promotes the optimal use of medicine and avoids waste and misuse. It significantly reduces the costs associated with this disease for the health system,"concluded Lalonde.
