This week Mayor Helene Daneault announced that the Hamilton Gardens project is a-go and it will be overseen by Wendy Gurd, a candidate in the upcoming by-elections. Daneault made the announcement August 12 at Les Peches du Fromager bistro. "We want this to be a community project," said Daneault.
Gurd is currently the president of Rosemere's 50th Anniversary celebrations, and is looking forward to the new endeavor. "I think everyone will benefit from this project. It really is a beautiful piece of land that hasn't been utilized," said Gurd.
Extensive project
The idea was proposed a few months ago when some citizens approached the city and made the suggestion. Located at 106 du chemin de la Grand-Cote, the Hamilton House has been a fixture in the Rosemere community for decades. It was transformed into a maison de la culture in 2002.
The project is now in its initial stages, with plans and details still in the works, but Daneault hopes that by next summer a part of the garden will be completed. "It's an extensive project that can take years. We hope to have atleast a section done in 2009," she said.
Art and culture
Overlooking the Milles-Iles river, the site is the ideal location for a garden. The space will also be used to showcase the works of local artists and artisans. "We are looking into displaying sculptures and artwork in the gardens. To us, culture and nature represents Rosemere," said Daneault. Also, the primary focus of the plans will be to help and protect the environment as much as possible. "That is our top priority with this project," said Daneault.
Rosemere's Horticulture and Ecological Society will also be involved, working closely with the city to create the oasis. "This will heighten Rosemere's value environmentally and culturally. It will be great project for the community," said Daneault.
