"Let's share the road" is the slogan for this year's annual campaign highlighting the importance of courtesy on the road. Several members of law enforcements across the province, as well as representatives from the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), Highway Control and Sûreté du Québec were on hand for the official launch May 1st.
The panel discussed the importance of sharing the road and different projects they would be engaging in to promote the campaign this month. "If everyone can do just one act of courtesy can make all the difference," said Sûreté du Québec Commander Jacques Beaupré at the launch.
A Group Effort
Many groups are involved in the campaign that seems to be growing year by year. Local police across the province in regions such as Laval, Terrbonne, Laurentides-Lanaudière, and Deux-Montagnes will be engaging in activities throughout the month to promote the campaign. "They will be handing out flyers, talking to the public and informing them of this campaign," said campaign spokesperson Marc Brièretraffic from 98.5 FM radio.
May 15th will mark the official day for the campaign where police in six principal regions of Quebec will devote time to spreading the positive message. "We don't want to discipline people about controlling their frustrations. We want it to be positive thing and about sharing the road as a community," explained Brièretraffic.
Goal is Safety
The campaign took it to the airwaves this year, as French radio station 98.5 FM and English station 940 AM produced spots to inform the listening audience. The playful ads are both informative and fun. "We want to get the message out there and many people listen to the radio while driving," explained Brièretraffic. The ads will run throughout the month as a reminder.
This year the campaign is focusing mainly on the impact of one simple act. "If everyone does just one act of courtesy once a day this whole month, it will make a huge difference on the road," said Brièretraffic. For more information on this year's campaign, visit http://www.surete.qc.ca.
