Last month, The Centre for Health and Social Services (CSSS) of Lac-des-Deux Montagnes was given the Award of Excellence for innovative projects resulting in reducing the energy bill, consumption of energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Quebec Association of Health Facilities and Social Services (AQESSS) awarded the prize to the CSSS at the SAN-TECH Exposition, which took place April 9 and 10 in Laval. "We feel very honoured to have been chosen. We are very small compared to some of the competition so this means a lot to us," said Michel Bordeleau, the director of technical services at the CSSS Lac-des-Deux Montagnes.
Major Savings
So far, only L'Hôpital Saint-Eustache has seen the significant changes. New equipment and major renovations resulted in a more efficient-functioning building and reducing energy costs. It took approximately $1.2 million of investments and grants to undergo the project, however savings in coming years will pay off.
Before the implementation of the project, the energy bill was estimated to top $900,000 a year. Upon the operation of the new equipment and facilities, there will be $140,000 in savings per year - over 15%. "We are very excited about this. Our goal was to reduce energy consumption over a period of seven years in all our institutions and we are well on our way," said Bordeleau.
Expansion Project
The project will renovate the hospitals ventilation, heating and cooling technology, replace old equipment and upgrade facilities. "Within two years, we hope to introduce these changes to all our institutions," said Bordeleau. The CSSS Lac-des-Deux Montagnes has four divisions along with the hospital: CLSC Jean-Olivier-Chénier, Centre d'hébergement de Saint-Benoit, and Centre d'hébergement de Saint-Eustache
In January 2007, Quebec Premier Jean Charest and Minister of Health and Social Services Phillipe Couillard gave the green light for a $40 million expansion project for L'Hôpital Saint-Eustache. "It works out very well as we are growing and need to work more efficiently," said Bordeleau. The vast project will see the facility expand by 30% upon completion.
